Link Roundup: September 10, 2016

Because I love you all so much, I brought you a new set of links.

Health

  * [The uncounted](http://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-uncounted-surveillance/) -- A detailed expose of a hidden epidemic: patients dying of drug-resistant infections, then having their deaths blamed on other factors to avoid properly counting the number of such infectious deaths.
  * [Workplace wellness programs are a sham](http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/the_ladder/2016/09/workplace_wellness_programs_are_a_sham.html) -- Somehow, this doesn't surprise me.

Social Justice

  * [Showdown over oil pipeline becomes a national movement for Native Americans](https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/showdown-over-oil-pipeline-becomes-a-national-movement-for-native-americans/2016/09/06/ea0cb042-7167-11e6-8533-6b0b0ded0253_story.html?hpid=hp_rhp-top-table-main_standing-rock-8am%3Ahomepage%2Fstory) -- This is a story that has developed very quickly, going from obscurity to the mainstream in the space of about a week. To be clear: dogs are being turned on peaceful demonstrators who are protesting a pipeline whose necessity is highly doubtful.
  * [Gamergate leader arrested on 2 felony counts of assaulting a police officer](http://www.dailydot.com/via/gamergate-ethan-ralph-arrested/) -- The owner of the Ralph Retort--one of the biggest promoters of online harassment--is facing serious charges.

Politics

  * [Behind closed doors, Donald Trump's adviser explains his real economic plan](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-economic-plan_us_57c9dc5ce4b0e60d31df29ae) -- Forget Trump not having a plan, his _actual_ plan is a disgrace: a massive contraction of government agencies and an almost total destruction of welfare programs for the most vulnerable Americans. Curious how his plan, as an "outsider," manages to resemble a Tea Party wet dream.
  * [Trump's history of corruption is mind-boggling. So why is Clinton supposedly the corrupt one?](https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2016/09/05/trumps-history-of-corruption-is-mind-boggling-so-why-is-clinton-supposedly-the-corrupt-one/?utm_term=.5e1ce96a7212) -- Why, indeed.
  * [14 excerpts from the FBI's report on Hillary Clinton's email](http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/09/14-excerpts-fbis-report-hillary-clintons-email) -- Kevin Drum actually read the report and is here to show you how much of a nothingburger it really is.
  * [Hillary Clinton gets gored](http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/05/opinion/hillary-clinton-gets-gored.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0) -- Paul Krugman points out that the excessive scrutiny toward Democratic candidates is nothing new, citing George W. Bush's unchallenged, bald-faced lies in comparison to Al Gore's endless trashing for being "stiff" and for (false) claims that he invented the Internet. There's a clear double-standard here, as if Democrats are expected to always be the adults in the room, while Republicans are expected to shrug and lie and get a pass for it.

Education

  * [Meet the parents who won't let their children study literature](https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/09/02/meet-the-parents-who-wont-let-their-children-study-literature/?utm_term=.b8af3aa782f5) -- Disparagement of the liberal arts really is a tragedy. There is so much to learn from the arts and humanities. Not everything has to be science and engineering.
  * [ITT Technical Institutes shuts down after 50 years in operation](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/09/06/itt-technical-institutes-shut-down-after-50-years-in-operations/?tid=pm_pop_b) -- The writing is on the wall for for-profit schools that don't produce viable career paths for their graduates.
